Recently, in May the UK government published a white paper policy document titled \u2018Restoring Control over the Immigration System\u2019. The purpose of this document was to propose ideas that would tighten the immigration mechanisms in place in order to reduce the overall immigration levels in the UK. Within this document, there are 8 new proposals:<\/p>\n
What do some of these proposed changes mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n For the time being, individuals who are on a \u2018route to settlement\u2019 can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after 5 years. However, the governments proposed changes may require individuals to wait up to 10 years before obtaining an ILR (bullet point 7). Not only this, but as seen in bullet point 6, the UK government aim to apply stricter rules to English language requirements meaning that<\/p>\n individuals have to show more fluency for the English language.
